Mayor Johnson Declares September 2018 as National Recovery Month

Proclamation of the City of Sedro-Woolley declaring September 2018 as National Recovery Month

Whereas, behavioral health is an essential part of health and one's overall wellness; and

Whereas, prevention of mental and/or substance use disorders works, treatment is effective, and people recover in our area and around the nation; and

Whereas, preventing and overcoming mental and/or substance use disorders is essential to achieving healthy lifestyles, both physically and emotionally; and

Whereas, we must encourage relatives and friends of people with mental and/or substance use disorders to implement preventative measures, recognize the signs of a problem, and guide those in need to appropriate treatment and recovery support services; and

Whereas, an estimated 12,500 people in Skagit County are affected by these conditions;
and

Whereas, the City recently devoted an entire issue of its quarterly City Scene magazine to the opioid epidemic, including personal stories of addiction and tragedy, articles from a variety of governmental organizations sharing different perspectives on the opioid crisis, and a treatment resource guide; and

Whereas, to help more people achieve and sustain long-term recovery, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), the North Sound Behavior Health Organization, and the City of Sedro-Woolley invite all residents of Sedro-Woolley to participate in National Recovery Month;

Now, Therefore, I, Julia Johnson, Mayor of the City of Sedro-Woolley, do hereby proclaim the month of September, 2018 as National Recovery Month in Sedro-Woolley and call upon the people of Sedro-Woolley to observe this month with appropriate activities, and ceremonies to support this year's Recovery Month theme, Join the Voices for Recovery: Invest in Health, Home, Purpose, and Community.
